We highlight the process of identifying microorganisms with high specificity. The animation displays how short 4 to 6 nucleotide sequences/k-mer along microbial genomes form intricate patterns based on genomic content and structure, creating robust taxonomic barcodes.
The animation represents how fluorocoded DNA is transferred, combed and stretched onto a DNA-binding surface. Fluorescence reading along with fluorocoded DNA creates optical maps. This process is highly parallelized and under ten minutes, hundreds of thousands of DNA molecules per sample are scanned.
